He painted kings and queens, princes and princesses, and many fascinating characters in post-Revolutionary France and the Netherlands—the breadth of his long career unknown to his descendants and, to a large degree, overlooked and forgotten in Europe. In 2009, I was introduced to his small portrait of my great-great-grandmother, Adèle Kinsoen Henrotin, who had lived with him and his wife, Augustine, in Paris. Soon after, I embarked on a multi-year, cross-cultural odyssey to understand this mysterious artist’s roots, and his life as a painter in Napoléon’s court After all, I was kin of Kinsoen!
